Harsha Wijayawardhana delivered this Sinhala-language online lecture on 22 April 2023 as part of the Institute of Archaeology and Heritage Studies series on Sinhala numeration, mathematics and technology.

The lecture was moderated by Anuradha Piyadasa. Nalaka Jayasena prepared the introduction to the video. The programme formed part of the wider intellectual discussion in which Professor Nalin de Silva addressed zero, infinity and the Pujavaliya.

Sinhala Zero and mathematical history

The lecture presents Harsha’s research on Sinhala numeral systems, historical mathematical practice and the Sinhala Zero. It connects evidence from inscriptions, ola-leaf manuscripts and the Pujavaliya with the development of place-value notation and the relationship between the hal lakuna, absence and zero.

Intellectual exchange with Professor Nalin de Silva

Professor Nalin de Silva contacted Harsha after learning of his research into Sinhala numerals and the Sinhala Zero. Their discussions considered the historical and philosophical implications of zero and contributed to the wider context from which Harsha developed his “Linguistic Zero” theory.
